Stephanie Johnston has been performing Celtic music and dance since she was a teenager, and has played with more than a dozen different bands in venues across the United States and Canada. She toured with the Carrboro group Cucanandy from 1997 to 2002, appearing at Cape Breton’s Celtic Colours International Festival, the New Bedford Folk Festival, Blissfest, and the Kennedy Center.
An enthusiastic teacher of Cape Breton step dancing, Gaelic song, and the bodhran (Irish drum), Stephanie has taught classes, private lessons, and workshops in the US and Canada since 1997. She has been on staff at the Swannanoa Gathering, the Augusta Heritage Center, and the Meadowlark Music Camp in Maine. In 2004 she founded the Asheville-based percussive dance group Twisty Cuffs, which performs regularly with Al Pettiway, Amy White, Robin Bullock, and EJ Jones. She lived in Nova Scotia from 2008 to 2013, where she directed the Antigonish Gaelic Choir (Cóisir Gáidhlig Antigonish), and taught for the Antigonish Creative Dance Association. She currently resides in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
